These include APRA (Australasian Performing Right Association) & PPNZ (Phonographic Performances New Zealand) whom charge licence fees to businesses / organisations for playing the radio, music or your favourite artists composition on hold. 

From a telephone on hold point of view, these bodies calculate this cost based predominantly on how many incoming phone lines your business has. Typically fees can range from $100 to in excess of $1000+ per year.

There are also copyright, licensing & re-broadcast constraints permitting your business from playing certain content.
